Spalting:  Coloring Wood with Fungi with Dr. Seri Robinson

Photo credits: Seri Robinson and Mark Lindquist

Did you know you can naturally color wood with fungi? The process is called spalting. This is a hands-on workshop where participants make their own pigments and then dye sample boards and even small items they have brought in. We will do some DIY spalting with live cultures on wood, do some extractions and “painting,” etc, and have a much more in-depth discussion on the fungi. If the weather cooperates, we will go on a little fungus foray, too!

About Seri Robinson

Dr. Seri Robinson is a professor of wood anatomy at Oregon State University, where they study the interaction of wood decay fungi and wood structure for both artistic (spalting) and scientific purposes. Also known as “Dr. Spalting” for their research and practice of coloring wood objects through the use of fungi. They recently authored an article for Fine Woodworking on food safety with wooden objects – think cutting boards – as well as several books.
