Chair Making SIG – Fall Program

This fall we are going to refocus the meetings with more emphasis on chair making techniques and hands-on practice sessions.  Of course, we still have the beginner chair so if you started one of these, please bring in your project and share your progress.

The September meeting will be dedicated to the making of spindles and rungs using a drawknife and spokeshave together with a shaving horse.   Bruce Schafer and Mike Peck have put together a demonstration in which they will split the raw material with a club and then shape it with a drawknife and spokeshave to create rungs and rear posts. After the demo there will be an opportunity for everyone to try it themselves.  If you haven’t seen (or tried) this before you’re in for a treat!

We will provide the necessary tools and wood to practice on.

We’ll have the usual discussion / show and tell but we’ll try to keep it short this month to give more time for the main demo and workshop.

In October we’ll learn how to carve seats from solid material.  This session will be led by Dave Heim.

Look forward to seeing you on September 9 at 6:30 PM in the Guild Studio.

As usual please register on the Guild calendar.

Best regards

Simon Bosley
