Woodworking is a very open ended activity.  From hobbyist to professional woodworker, there's something for everyone.  And there are many organized groups in the Portland, Oregon area where you can meet people with like interests and  expand your knowledge of a particular area.

Check into these organizations.  Attend a meeting to see if it works for you.  Share the enthusiasm of the people in these groups.

Guild of Oregon Woodworkers
Emphasis on furniture building but a very diverse club with interests in many areas of woodworking
Meets the third Wednesday of every month.  Soon to be second Thursday (as  of August 2013)

Cascade Wood Turners
Specifically for wood turners - educating woodturners and the public, in and about the art and craft of woodturning.
Meets the third Thursday of every month generally at Franklin High School

Northwest Wood Turners 
Specifically for wood turners to promote the learning and enjoyment of woodturning
