Guild Meetings

Each month the guild strives to conduct a general meeting that is informative, educational and enjoyable for our members. Topics cover a range of woodworking techniques.

General Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month starting at 7:00 pm. The Board Meeting is held at 5:00 pm before the General Meeting and is scheduled to end at 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend both parts.

We are always on the lookout for suggestions of topics or improvements we can make to the meetings. If you have input please contact our program chairs.

DateEventDescription
5/21/2008 Intra-Guild Woodworking Contest

The Architectural Heritage Center
Portland

This Guild meeting is the event many of us wait and work for, as we all get together to strut our stuff. Members are invited to bring in a project they have made, so long as it hasn't been entered in a guild contest before. These projects will be judged by their fit, form, and function, as well as the extent to which it's creator has displayed the natural beauty of the wood(s) used. Entrants will recieve a small, unnamed and numbered card on which to provide their products' characteristics and any interesting qualities or data that may be desired; the names will be kept secret from the judges until the time when we announce the winners. All entrants will recieve a certificate for entering, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three projects in each of three classes; Professional, Intermediate, and Hobbyist. The three number 1 winners (#1 in each class) will then be judged separately to determine which of the three is the best WITH RESPECT TO ITS CLASS, making it the "Best of Show"; that winner will recieve the "George E. DuBois Award", a beautiful wooden plaque made by our own Len Walko , himself an annual threat in this contest. The fourth place winner in that class will then be bumped up to win the third place prize. Prizes will be handed out at our June meeting. The "first, second, and third" places may be modified on the night of the event based upon how many contestants there are in each class; if there are only three contestants in a catagory, such as the case of last years "beginner" class, then prizes may be subtracted from that class and added to another class that may be comparativly oversized, hopefully giving the entire group a better chance of winning a deserved prize. This decision will be made by Brian and Marilyn, and will be deemed final and at their descretion. Comments are absolutely invited. There are differences this year, and they were designed to open the doors of fairness. Hopefully, all who enter will feel a better opportunity to win. Winners will be asked to talk for a minute or two about their project after the contest has been decided, as well as answer questions from the group. Lets get it together, ladies and gents, and have a great time!

Driving Directions:

6/18/2008 An evening at Rockler

11773 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy
Beaverton

Joe has invited us to spend an evening at Rockler to show us his store and give us an overview on some finishes, their Beadlock product, and Kreg pocket holes. He will also hand out discount coupons, most for $5 but a couple for $25(!) for in store purchases, and has offered to keep the store open for an extra hour to allow us to roam about and use them. Rockler has been a great sponsor for our guild, let's be there to thank them accordingly. We will also be handing out the prize monies for the winners of Mays Woodworking contest. The committee will meet for an hour at 5:30, then we can chat about until 7:00 when the structured meeting will start. Bring a chair, and I'll meet you there.

Driving Directions:

Take Hwy 217 to the Beaverton exit and look for the large clock tower by the Fred Meyer store, snoop around the clock area and you'll find 'em...

7/16/2008 An evening with The Rebuilding Center

Franklin High School
Portland

Genesis McKiernan-Allen has agreed to come out and give us a presentation about The Rebuilding Center, a non-profit group that strives to keep perfectly good material from being destroyed by either simply reselling it or making new products from it. While wood is a large media that they use, other items, such as doors, windows, and sinks, are available for re-use as well at very reasonable prices. The committee will meet at 5:30 for an hour, then we will chat around until 7:00 when the meeting starts.

Driving Directions:

Take SE Powell to 52nd, turn North to SE Woodward, then right on Woodward; the shop is right on the corner on the left.
